How Often to Change a Honda CR-V Engine Air Filter

On a Honda CR-V built from 2007 onward, the engine air filter is due when the instrument panel displays Maintenance Minder sub-code 2, and Honda's Maintenance Minder tables print no normal-conditions mileage for it. The tables in the 2018 and 2023 CR-V documents on owners.honda.com define code 2 as three jobs on one line: replace air cleaner element, replace dust and pollen filter, inspect drive belt. The only mileage Honda attaches to it is a footnote: "If you drive in dusty conditions, replace the air cleaner element every 15,000 miles (24,000 km)." The 30,000-mile figure repeated across the internet is also Honda's, but it belongs to the fixed-mileage schedules used before Maintenance Minder, which read "Replace air cleaner element every 30,000 mi/48,000 km (independent of time)." What Maintenance Minder code 2 actually orders

Code 2 is a bundle of three services, and reading it as a single job is where the confusion starts. Honda's table, reproduced word for word in both the 2018 and the 2023 CR-V Maintenance Minder documents, lists those three bullets under the number. The letter in front of it carries the oil work: A is "Replace engine oil," while B is "Replace engine oil and oil filter" plus inspections of the front and rear brakes, tie rod ends, steering gearbox and boots, suspension components, driveshaft boots, brake hoses and lines, all fluid levels, the exhaust system, and fuel lines and connections. A display reading B12 therefore means the oil and filter, that whole inspection list, a tire rotation, both filters, and a belt check.

The drive-belt inspection inside code 2 has no separate interval of its own. It happens whenever the air filter does, which for most CR-V owners means the belt gets looked at two or three times in the life of the vehicle.

Honda gives three warning stages before the code turns urgent. The 2023 and 2024 CR-V manuals pair "Maintenance Due Soon" with 15 percent engine oil life remaining, "Maintenance Due Now" with 5 percent, and "Maintenance Past Due" with a blinking negative distance that appears once you have driven more than 10 miles beyond zero.

The letter is not universal, and this is the part worth knowing before you telephone a dealer in another country. A Canadian CR-V displays main code 0 where a US car displays B, and Canadian manuals carry a code 9 for front and rear brake service that the US table does not list at all. The work under the mark is identical. The issuing market differs. I catalogue transport marks for a living, and this is the ordinary condition of every coding system I have handled: the mark identifies the authority that issued it before it identifies the thing.

Where the 30,000-mile number came from

Honda did publish a normal-conditions mileage for the air cleaner element, and then stopped. The owner's-manual maintenance schedules still hosted on Honda's techinfo service portal, from the years before Maintenance Minder reached the CR-V, state it under Normal Conditions as "Replace air cleaner element every 30,000 mi/48,000 km (independent of time)." The Severe Conditions schedule in the same document swaps that line for "Replace air cleaner element every 15,000 mi/24,000 km (independent of time) under dusty conditions, otherwise use Normal Conditions schedule."

When Maintenance Minder arrived on the CR-V for the 2007 model year, the 30,000-mile line left the manual and the 15,000-mile dusty line stayed, demoted to footnote *2 on the code table. Quote 30,000 miles to a 2018 CR-V owner and you are quoting a retired schedule for that vehicle. It is not a bad estimate. It is simply not what Honda tells that car's owner to follow.

What owners actually do sits further out. RepairPal, which aggregates real shop invoices, reports that it typically sees the CR-V engine air filter replaced at approximately 40,000 miles. That gap between 30,000 and 40,000 is the interesting number in this whole subject, and nobody publishes an explanation for it.

Normal or severe: Honda's own definition of your driving

Honda does not leave "severe" to interpretation. Its maintenance schedule tells US owners to follow the Severe Conditions schedule if they drive MAINLY under one or more of these, and the capitals are Honda's:

  1. Driving less than 5 miles (8 km) per trip, or in freezing temperatures, less than 10 miles (16 km) per trip
  2. Driving in extremely hot conditions, over 90°F (32°C)
  3. Extensive idling or long periods of stop-and-go driving
  4. Trailer towing, driving with a roof rack, or driving in mountainous conditions

None of those four triggers the 15,000-mile air filter interval by itself. That interval has one trigger only, and it is the word "dusty." A CR-V that tows a trailer through cold city traffic is on the severe schedule for its transmission and its oil while remaining on the normal schedule for its air filter.

Honda never defines "dusty" numerically, and I have not found a Honda document that does. In practice it means unpaved roads, gravel driveways, construction sites, agricultural work, desert or coastal sand, and one seasonal case that surprises people. In Tallinn, where I work, the streets are gritted with crushed stone all winter, and when the snow goes in April that grit comes back up as airborne street dust for several weeks. It is seven in the evening as I write this and the day's dispatch queries are cleared, which is the only reason I checked my own filter this month rather than next. A car that never leaves paved roads can still spend a month a year breathing something close to quarry air.

Two CR-Vs from the same model year can take different filters

The recurring question in my own work is why one destination carries several abbreviations. Honda's parts catalogue answers it the way a customs table does: the code is issued against a technical configuration, never against a name. The CR-V splits on this twice, once in 2017 and again in 2023, and the year alone will not tell you which side you are on.

Part numbers and list prices are from Honda's OEM parts catalogue as published by HondaPartsNow. The 2017 split is the one that catches people: the base LX kept the 2.4-litre engine and takes 17220-5PH-A00, while every trim above it received the 1.5-litre turbo and takes 17220-5AA-A00. The 2023 generation repeats the pattern between the 1.5 turbo and the 2.0 hybrid. Owners of the 2020–2022 hybrid report that its 17220-5K0-A00 element carries a notch the 2023 part lacks, so the two do not interchange even where the dimensions look close.

One outlier is worth recording. The air filter listed for the 2025 CR-V e:FCEV, part 3G420-6GS-A01, carries an MSRP of $261.78. A fuel cell stack is fussier about what it inhales than a piston engine is.

The engine filter and the dust and pollen filter are not the same purchase

This is the comparison that costs owners money, and it exists because Honda bundled both filters under one code. The engine filter, which Honda calls the air cleaner element, sits in the airbox in the engine bay and feeds the engine. The cabin filter, which Honda calls the dust and pollen filter, sits behind the glovebox and feeds you. Code 2 calls for both on the same visit, so an advisor quoting "the filter" may be quoting either one.

They cost different amounts. RepairPal puts an engine air filter replacement at a Honda CR-V shop between $61 and $78, with $32 to $47 of that being labour. The cabin filter runs $72 to $91, with labour between $40 and $59, because reaching behind the glovebox takes longer than opening an airbox. Parts are close: Honda lists the CR-V cabin filter at $28.52 for 2007–2016 models under part 80292-SDA-407, and $29.25 for 2017–2026 models under 80291-TF3-E01.

The symptoms differ too, and they are the fastest way to tell which one your car is actually asking for. A loaded engine filter shows up as sluggish response and, in bad cases, a running complaint. A loaded cabin filter shows up as weak airflow from the vents and a musty smell when the fan starts. Neither symptom means the other filter is dirty.

Changing it yourself, by generation

The airbox hardware follows the engine, exactly as the part number does.

On the 2012–2016 CR-V and on the 2.4-litre 2017–2019 LX, the airbox lid is held by metal spring clips and needs no tools at all. O'Reilly's procedure for the 2011–2016 car counts three clips, one on the right and two on the left. Release them, lift the lid and slide it slightly left to free it from the tab on the right, then lift the element straight up.

On the 1.5-litre turbo cars from 2017 to 2022, the lid is held by four captive screws, one at each corner. Owners on the CR-V Owners Club forum report that the heads look like Phillips but are JIS cross-point, and that a Phillips driver cams out and rounds them. The reliable approach is an 8 mm socket on the hex head, and the screws only need to be backed out, not removed. Several owners in those threads describe snapping a head off screws that a shop had run down with an impact driver, and finding an already-broken screw left in the housing from a previous service.

Torque is where the published record thins out. The one figure I can source is from an ALLDATA Honda service procedure carried by UnderhoodService, which specifies torquing the two air cleaner housing flange bolts to 7.2 lb-ft (9.8 N·m). That figure covers the bolts holding the housing assembly to the engine bay, not the lid fasteners. The owner's-manual air-cleaner procedure published on Honda's techinfo portal tells the owner to loosen the cover screws and then simply "tighten" them on reassembly, with no torque value given at all. The lid screws exist to hold the element's rubber seal flat against the box. Snug is the specification, and it is the only one Honda offers.

Two details apply to every generation. Lift the old element straight out rather than tipping it, because the intake tube below is open and anything you drop into it goes into the engine. And wipe the housing with a damp rag before the new element goes in, seal seated evenly on all four sides.

What Maintenance Minder does not measure

The system does not read your filter. Main codes A and B are calculated from engine operating conditions, but the numbered sub-items run independent distance counters. Sub-code 2 counts miles and nothing else. A CR-V driven behind a combine harvester and a CR-V driven on motorway asphalt reach code 2 at the same odometer reading.

That is the whole argument for opening the box yourself. If your driving matches Honda's dusty-conditions footnote, the 15,000-mile figure overrides the dashboard, and the dashboard will not tell you so. Honda's manual also does not instruct owners to inspect the engine air filter at every oil change. Dealers who check it at every service are doing more than the schedule requires, which is useful and is also a selling opportunity, and both of those things can be true at once.

The counters reset independently as well. Resetting oil life after an A service does not clear a pending code 2, and clearing code 2 without changing the element leaves you with a filter whose age nothing in the car is now tracking.
